IBIZA - SANT ANTONI DE PORTMANY - RESTAURANTE CALA SALADA
RESTAURANTE CALA SALADA We have often been to this family-run beach restaurant in a secluded bay. It is down a steep road. Parking is available halfway down, and a local bus service stops near the bottom of the road. The bus is the easiest and least exhausting way to get there. We turned up without a reservation on this occasion and were fortunate to be given a table inside. Once settled in, we had this excellent lunch, starting with ensalada casa (house salad) and a few beer

ANDALUCÍA - MÁLAGA CITY - PALOCORTADO
PALOCORTADO This excellent restaurant is situated outside of the crowded old town area of bars and restaurants and is well worth a visit. We arrived early for Andalucía at 8.15 pm, and it was empty, but when we left at 10.15 pm, it was full to bursting, as is the way in Málaga. It is an excellent spot for an aperitivo; we had a fabulous palocortado cocktail to begin the evening. There is also a superb wine list. Once settled in, we began our meal with G azpachuelo cremoso

ANDALUCÍA - MÁLAGA - PEDREGALEJO - RESTAURANTE EL CALEÑO
RESTAURANTE EL CALEÑO To find a nice lunch in the sun, with a view of the sea, head east, along the coastal road from Málaga for about 6 km, and you will arrive in Pedregalejo. It's a pleasant walk or a short taxi ride from Málaga centre. Looking back toward Málaga City Just before you get to Pedregalejo, you will see Baños del Carmen, a summer seaside resort that was opened for the rich and famous in 1918. The still beautiful building and its ruined gardens are now a restau

FORMENTERA - PLATJA DE MIGJORN - LA FRAGATA
LA FRAGATA I walked into La Fragata (founded by Mari y Juan in 1979), the restaurant just down the beach from me, and the waiters immediately grabbed my hand and hailed me, remembering me from last year. The owner came out and declared, “Jon Listen “, the man from California ......... It was close enough, and I felt like frigging Ernest Hemingway……… I have been craving fish, especially dorada (gilthead sea bream), and they have it. Some fish are priced by the kg, so be caref

DONOSTIA-SAN SEBASTIÁN - RESTAURANTE SALTXIPI
RESTAURANTE SALTXIPI Chef Jon Ortega is at the stove grilling sensational-looking gambas, hake, monkfish, turbot and T-bone steaks. Famous for its spider crabs, which it keeps in the basement, this has become a place for trendy thirty-somethings. Look out for the Ibiza-style chill-out to be added soon. The food is traditional, so if you order turbot or red sea bream, you get that —no extras, expertly cooked. The menu is quite spider crab-based, so it should be with such a g

CATALUNYA - BARCELONA - SHUNKA
SHUNKA After arriving 15 minutes late, after some difficulty finding the restaurant, we were told there would not be enough time for the tasting menu. After a few pleading, encouraging words, they relented and served us the Shunka menu. It is a charming restaurant with good furnishings. Menu Shunka €75 per person. Raw oyster with ponzu sauce. Red Mullet with ponzu sauce. Deep-fried hake cheeks. Sushi of smoked sardine. Steamed cockles, with sake. Sashimi. Tuna belly, sea urc

ANDALUCÍA - ALMERÍA - GARRUCHA - RESTAURANTE ESCÁNEZ
RESTAURANTE ESCÁNEZ We returned to an old favourite, Restaurante Escánez. Located on the Almeria coast, in the municipality of Garrucha since 1982, it was remodelled in 2004. A few years earlier, we were invited to Almería 2019, a food celebration held after Almería was named Capital Española de la Gastronomía 2019. We toured the fish auction, then had a lavish feast at Castillo San Ramón/Las Escobetas on the outskirts of Garrucha. Local chefs, including Paco Escánez of Rest

ANDALUCÍA - SEVILLA - TAPAS TOUR 1 - 2019
An evening tapas tour in the stunning, sunny city of Sevilla with Shawn Hennessey of Sevilla Tapas. After meeting Shawn in the Plaza Nueva by the Hotel Inglaterra, we headed to our first stop at Bodeguita Romero. ANDALUCÍA - MÁLAGA - MARBELLA - LOBITO DE MAR
LOBITO DE MAR Michelin Plate IIO This beachless chiringuito on the N-340, on the outskirts of Marbella, is less expensive than Dani García’s other ventures; nevertheless, it still offers superb quality. It’s a very hip, modern and inviting restaurant with a vibrant atmosphere. On arrival, the fish in the display cabinet looked very fresh. I liked that they have made space for a tapas chillout section. We had a few tapas to start. Tapa de gazpacho. Tapa gambas blanco (w
