ANDALUCÍA - CÁDIZ - TABERNA LA SORPRESA

TABERNA LA SORPRESA On a short trip to Cádiz in November 2022, we popped into Taberna La Sorpresa for a few tapas and a drop of the local sherry wines.

This Taberna is a very underrated hidden gem and is quite particular in that the tapas and the platos here highlight fresh fish, instead of the mainly fried seafood in other places in Cádiz. Go here once you have had enough fried food and want to try something unique to the area.

We started with a couple of copas of manzanilla,


followed by, sardinas Marinadas.

Two boneless sardine loins.

Gildas

Small green pepper, boneless anchovy, and olives.

Bacoreta de almadraba en aceite, also called sarda.

It is a very fine fillet of tuna cured in olive oil. Normally served on toast.

Atún mechado and lomo de orza.

Slow-cooked tuna loin served at room temperature and two pork tenderloin medallions topped with thinly sliced Jamón Iberico.

If they have the house-smoked salmon, don't miss it or the tuna tartar and sashimi, which are both fabulous. They also do a lovely simple plate of fresh tomatoes swimming in local olive oil. Obviously, they have a large selection of sherry by the glass. We also had some red wine, Viña Mariposa Tinto, and Bodegas El Inicio 'Rivendel' Crianza.

The menu is not that extensive, which is normally a good sign that everything is fresh and just means you can try almost everything.

The staff are great fun and the whole place has a very convivial atmosphere.


The dining room is quite small, so be sure to book.
