ENGLAND - MANCHESTER - BAR SAN JUAN
BAR SAN JUAN After a few local recommendations, we have been meaning to come to this restaurant in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, on the outskirts of Manchester, for some time. On this cold Monday evening in November, we finally made it. This restaurant is a traditional bar, serving authentic tapas. The atmosphere indoors is cosy and full of character, with bullfighting posters. This is a nice place to go to eat in Manchester. We picked quite a few of the tapas: Jamo croquetas (ham croq

IBIZA - SANT ANTONI DE PORTMANY - CAN RAMONET
CAN RAMONET UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2025: We believe the restaurant is now owned by Pikes Hotel (just down the road), so prices, opening times, and conditions may have changed. This is a typical roadside café/bar/restaurant you will find when driving inland in Ibiza. It's a great place to disconnect from the island's hustle and bustle. Just past Pikes, on the way from Sant Antoni de Portmany (San Antonio), we stopped one day for a quick cold drink. A very happy waitress was singin

ANDALUCÍA - ALMERÍA - AGUA AMARGA - RESTAURANTE LA PALMERA
We often visit the Parque Natural del Cabo de Gata-Níjar in the province of Almería (Andalucía’s most significant protected coastal area, with a wild, isolated landscape and a hot desert climate). This time, we went to Agua Amarga, which borders spectacular, barren spaghetti western territory. This low-key village packs in cool bars, restaurants, locals, and fishermen. Beside a headland of troglodyte caves at the southern end of the beach. Most of the tourists here are Spanis

DONOSTIA-SAN SEBASTIÁN - PARTE VIEJA - GANDARIAS JATETXEA
GANDARIAS JATETXEA We returned to Casa Gandarias for our regular fill of pintxo de solomillo and red wine! We had a bottle of El Lagar de Isilla Paraje Peñalobos Tinta del Pais 2018 DOC Ribera del Duero . This was a good match with the solomillo. The famous Basque Gildas. Guindilla pepper, green olive and fresh anchovy - named after Rita Haywood (hot, tall and spicy). During this visit, we also had a sit-down lunch with a group at the restaurant. Something not done before a

ANDALUSIA - CÁDIZ CITY - EL FARO
EL FARO This hidden treasure, tucked away in the old fishing quarter of Cádiz, offers authentic Spanish dining. A locally popular family-run restaurant. Nicely set-up tables and unpretentious cuisine, featuring outstanding fish and seafood dishes. In the past, we have eaten in the restaurant and the bar area. It’s a different place post-COVID. The bar has been revamped with three new rooms, each the size of the original. I miss the hustle and bustle of people and the theatre.

IBIZA - SANT ANTONY DE PORTMANY - S-MARI COCINA BAR
I’ve walked past S-Mari Cocina Bar countless times, thinking it was just another hostal with a bar. I even had breakfast there once, ages ago. But a friend recommended it for dinner, and I decided to give it another shot. To my surprise, it turned out to be a classy and welcoming local restaurant. It’s a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of central San Antonio. Breakfast Bliss Every morning, they offer a fantastic breakfast selection. If you’re craving a traditiona

BASQUE COUNTRY - BILBAO - RESTAURANTE ASADOR TXAKOLI SIMÓN
RESTAURANTE ASADOR TXAKOLI SIMÓN After a 15/20 minute walk from the Funicular de Artxanda (funicular railway), you arrive high above Bilbao at Restaurante Asador Txakolli Simón. The Friesian breed of cow is the favourite of Óscar García, the grill master at this restaurant, which stands out for its value for money. On busy days here, eight strips (rib strips) can be dispatched in a single service. When the sun is shining in Bilbao, you go to Artxanda, the viewpoint of Bilbao

CASA BALBINO Sanlúcar de Barrameda (or simply Sanlúcar) is a city in the north-west of Cádiz province, part of the autonomous community of Andalucía in southern Spain. (The other two are Jerez de la Frontera, for which sherry is named, and El Puerto de Santa María.) Although a seaside

ANDALUSIA - CÁDIZ CITY - RESTAURANTE SONÁMBULO
RESTAURANTE SONÁMBULO A second review from our friend Bill Benham, on his brief visit to Cádiz. This restaurant is in a hidden spot with a beautiful interior. You will fall for the interior’s simplicity, with attractive retro and rustic details and plants and flowers adorning the walls. Their modern fusion cuisine combines traditional and exotic ingredients to create innovative dishes. We had a fabulous night in this fantastic restaurant with excellent service and incredi

ANDALUSIA - CÁDIZ CITY - RESTAURANTE BALANDRO
RESTAURANTE BALANDRO Our friend, Bill Benham, visited this excellent Restaurant in Cádiz, offering a varied and high-quality menu featuring local fish. They serve designer tapas in a modern, hip, and vibrant place. There is a Restaurant area that requires reservations, as well as a bar area featuring high stools. It does get extremely popular, so get there early (8 pm) if you want a seat at the bar. Tataki de atún Ensalada de langostinos and mango Albondegas de merluza Gambas
