Before our summer trip to San Sebastián, we ventured over the border into southwestern France, although still in the Basque Country, to the elegant seaside resort of Biarritz. The town has been a popular resort since European royalty began visiting in the 1800s. It’s also a major surfing destination, with long sandy beaches and surfers.

A symbol of Biarritz, the Rocher de la Vierge is a rocky outcrop topped by a statue of the Virgin Mary, accessible via a footbridge. It offers sweeping views of the Bay of Biscay.

On our second day, we visited this famous old, traditional, seafood restaurant that backs onto the wooded slope overlooking the old fishing port. It is decorated in nautical motifs inside and out, and has a great relaxing summer terrace.

It is known for its grilled fish, and regional wines.

Once seated and settled in, we began with, six huîtres locales (six of their famous local oysters).

Then we had the famous fish soup - Soups de poissons maison, croûtons dorés et rouille maison.

Homemade fish soup, croutons, cheese, and rouille.

Traditionally the croutons, rouille, and cheese are then added to the fish soup.

We had a local Château Moncassin Buzet Blanc (50% Sémillon et 50% Sauvignon blanc). It was perfect with the excellent seafood dishes.

The restaurant was bustling. Remember, lunch here starts around noon (helpful hint if you’re used to Spanish timetables, which is normally 2 pm).

It rains in Biarritz, even in summer, quite often!

Service was delightfully French (meaning efficient, a little formal, and very good), making this an excellent spot for lunch in town.
The next day, the sun was back, and we enjoyed a walk along La Grande Plage in the sunshine.
