CASA PUGA

There is no more classic bar in all of Almería than this one. It is an old-style bar known for traditional Andalusian tapas steeped in history. It dates back to 1870, undoubtedly one of the oldest in Almería.

Overloaded with ancient wine bottles on dusty shelves, tiled walls, a marble bar, an exposed iron grill, and hanging Jamónes, these are key parts of the decoration, as are the several non-stop waiters.

All the tapas are excellent but straightforward. Try,
Queso azul sobre tostada (blue cheese on toast).

Pimientos de padrón (padrón peppers).

Gambas pil-pil (garlic prawns).
Sizzling garlic prawns.

Salchichon Ibérico (Salami).

Jamón Ibérico de Bellota 100%.

Solomillo con ajo y laurel (sirloin steak with garlic and bay leaf).

Queso viejo manchego y almendras (vintage manchego cheese and almonds).

They also serve vermouth on tap, a large selection of Spanish wines (we had two bottles of Muga 2014 from D.O.Rioja this time) and beer with free tapa, which depends on your order/time.

It is considered a must-see historic bar in Almería, for its authentic Andalusian atmosphere rather than another modern tourist restaurant.

It is a good tapas stop while exploring the old town.

It is best to go early (around 13:00 or 20:00) if you wish to avoid the queue’s and crowds.

When busy, standing at the bar is quite normal.

It is perhaps one of the most touristy places, it is well worth having a couple of tapas and a few cañas to soak up Almería’s history.

Cash is useful in busy periods.
