CASA JUAN PEDRO
Before our summer trip to San Sebastián, we ventured over the border into France, although still in the Basque Country, to the stunning seaside resort of Biarritz. This was very popular with high-flying Edwardians at the turn of the 1900s

On leaving our hotel, we had a short coastal stroll to the Le Port des Pêcheurs (Arrantzaleen Portua in the local Basque language).

It was hectic during this summer evening, so after a couple of false starts, we finally decided to have dinner at Casa Juan Pedro. We had to wait in line for a short time because it was jam-packed. Luckily, the service was very efficient, and soon a table became available for us.
No tablecloths here, no pretence, just the sea, a grill, and people who know exactly what the hell they’re doing.
Once settled in, we started with a carafe of the local white wine.

After studying the menu, we chose,

Brochettes de crevettes (three skewers of very succulent prawns in a tangy garlic sauce).

Rabas (very soft, deep-fried squid strips in a crispy breadcrumb batter and mayonnaise ).

Filet de dorade á I’espagnole (grilled gilt-head bream with rice and ratatouille).

Merlu á I’espagnole (grilled hake Spanish style, with rice and ratatouille (stewed aubergine, courgette, bell peppers, tomatoes, onions).

We did not bother with desserts on this occasion.
It is a great spot to sit on the terrace overlooking the harbour on a sultry summer’s evening. The bill came to a very reasonable €79 for two people.
Speaking too soon, the heavens were about to open on the way back to the hotel, and we got in just in time before we got soaked.
The next day after the deluge.

A warm plage du Port Vieux, Biarritz.

Next day, a rainy La Grande Plage, Biarritz.
