FRANCE - BASQUE COUNTRY - BIARRITZ - CHEZ ALBERT
CHEZ ALBERT Before our summer trip to San Sebastián, we ventured over the border into southwestern France, although still in the Basque Country, to the elegant seaside resort of Biarritz. The town has been a popular resort since European royalty began visiting in the 1800s. It’s also a major surfing destination, with long sandy beaches and surfers. A symbol of Biarritz, the Rocher de la Vierge is a rocky outcrop topped by a statue of the Virgin Mary, accessible via a footbrid

BASQUE COUNTRYSIDE - ARRASATE - RESTAURANTE ARTEAGA LANDETXEA
RESTAURANTE ARTEAGA LANDETXEA Michelin Bib Gourmand During our three-night stay in the Basque Country town of Elorrio, the friendly duo of Niko Moreno and Maider Ugarriza of Hotela M&UGA organised a seven-seater taxi to take us to Restaurante Arteaga Landetxea for lunch. The restaurant was a twenty-minute drive away from Elorrio to Arrasate (Gipuzkoa). It is a restored historic farmhouse in the heart of the stunning Basque Countryside. Maider Larrañaga and Igor Ezpeleta

ANDALUCÍA - JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA - LÚ COCINA Y ALMA
LÚ COCINA Y ALMA Two Michelin Stars (new 2025) Chef Juanlu Fernandez began his career as an artisan pastry chef, then moved through the kitchens of many of Spain’s great chefs. Exploring his passion for French cuisine and merging it with the traditional Andalusian cuisine of his hometown of Jerez de la Frontera. The restaurant's visual impact is prominent here. The kitchen stands in the centre of the dining room, enabling the chefs to interact more closely with guests and

ANDALUCÍA - MÁLAGA - PEDREGALEJO - MARISQUERÍA FREIDURÍA SALVADOR Y LUCAS
MARISQUERÍA FREIDURÍA SALVADOR Y LUCAS We are still in the little fishing village of Pedregalejo, and this time, we headed to Marisquería Freiduría Salvador y Lucas. Again, the restaurant is on the road running parallel to the paseo and the beach, which is home to many more restaurants. The food is spectacular, a real spectacle. Nothing, absolutely nothing, of what you order will be tasteless or past its best. They always use the correct frying oil (not always the case elsew

IBIZA - SANT ANTONI DE PORTMANY - LA JOSEFITA
LA JOSEFITA IBIZA La Josefita is a lovely little restaurant in the backstreets of Sant Antoni de Portmany (San Antonio), near the infamous West End, which is currently undergoing a massive transformation. This new tapas restaurant, opened in August, pays tribute to Grandma Pepita - Josefa Pepita. The Josefita offers a concise menu of reimagined, familiar tapas. We started with; Sabrasada con calamares bebés (a stunning sabrasada with deep-fried baby squid) Albóndigas (incredi

ANDALUCÍA - MÁLAGA - A JANUARY TAPAS BAR CRAWL IN MARBELLA
It is not easy to have a tapas bar crawl in Marbella, at least, not in the strict sense of the term, as the bars are not very close together. So we were pleasantly surprised with our evening stroll in mid-January. The town’s geography is quite peculiar, without a clearly defined old town or centre, which means there can be a bit of walking between bars. There are various styles here, including tapas and pintxos, markets and seafood cuisine, from traditional small wineries to

ANDALUCÍA - MÁLAGA - PEDREGALEJO - PRIMITIVO RESTAURANTE
PRIMITIVO RESTAURANTE To get to this restaurant, head east, along the coastal road from Málaga for about 6 km, and you will arrive in Pedregalejo. It's a pleasant 30- to 40-minute walk or a short taxi ride from Málaga centre. The still, very traditional village of Pedregalejo has retained its local character and charm, avoiding the ruin caused by tourism. This old fishing village is now known for its excellent restaurants, which line the promenade next to the beach. In the

BASQUE COUNTRY - BILBAO - RESTAURANTE VICTOR MONTES
RESTAURANTE VICTOR MONTES After a long day and with many places closed on Sunday, we decided to stay close to the hotel and have dinner at Víctor Montes in Plaza Nueva. This famous local landmark is nicely rowdy downstairs at peak times. Locals and a few tourists prop up the bar, chat loudly, and snack on pintxos like the txangurro (spider crab in puff pastry) while downing a glass of wine or a caña. The vaulted wine cellar holds Rioja vintages dating back over a century, al

MADRID - MUSEO DEL JAMÓN
MUSEO DEL JAMÓN A few of these Museo del Jamón tapas bars are scattered around Madrid, and this one at Carrera San Jeronimo 6 is our particular favourite. They all offer an eclectic mix of traditional Spanish food, centred on ham, bread, beer & wine. This place can be a godsend for those concerned about how much they spend. A beer and a ham & cheese bocadillo (roll) can be bought for around €1; you cannot beat that. If you have more money, try one of the less expensive Jamón’
