HURRICANE HOTEL

The palm-fronted Hurricane Hotel sits above the beach where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, with Morocco just 15 km away across the straits of Gibraltar. It is on the coastal highway outside the town of Tarifa.

The laid-back Andalusian theme is set in lush gardens with a romantic dinner terrace with views across Africa.

The wind and kite-surfing school helps you make the most of Tarifa's famous waves.

With the quiet patio and garden, this place is a lovely retreat during the warm months. The location is a few miles' drive into town, so that might be a concern if you want to try other restaurants. Even though the building is only two stories tall, some visitors may have difficulty with the stairs.
There are two-bedroom family villa-style rooms and straightforward, plain standard rooms. Coffee facilities are unavailable in the morning, and the rooms have no TV.

The informal breakfast and dinner are delicious, although they don't offer a cooked breakfast. However, plenty of fresh strawberries, melon, kiwis and large croissants are provided daily.
Dinner is excellent, with lovely surroundings and an intimate atmosphere. It is worth staying at the hotel rather than driving into Tarifa, although exploring the town is also necessary. The only downside with children is that the restaurant doesn't serve food until 8 pm.

The beach bar is excellent, and the food is lovely.

The horse riding stables attached to the hotel offer fantastic rides in the mountains and on the beach. The beach is long, sandy and breathtaking. So, it's not a bad base if you have a family that enjoys horse riding and water sports in season.

Two beautiful swimming pools are open year-round (if you are brave enough). One is an adults-only (16+) pool within the gym/spa area with a hot tub on the roof. There is also a steam room, which is nice after a day spent kiting or in the water.

The friendly bar also serves as the reception area and has a billiard table for little and big kids.

Massages and pilates classes can be booked at reception. It is a place to unwind; don't expect a standard hotel. It's very individual. The staff is invaluable and goes out of their way to help you. There is no shop nearby and no buses into town.
Taxis cost around €30 to get into Tarifa centre, or you can walk 8 km! A taxi to Gibraltar costs around €80
