ALMERÍA - GARRUCHA - RESTAURANTE ESCÁNEZ

RESTAURANTE ESCÁNEZ

We returned to an old favourite, Restaurante Escánez. Located on the Almeria coast, in the municipality of Garrucha since 1982 it was remodelled in 2004

A few years earlier we had been invited to Almería2019, which was a food celebration after Almería was made Capital Española de la Gastronomía 2019.

We had had a tour of the fish auction and then we went for a lavish feast at Castillo San Ramón / Las Escobetas on the outskirts of Garrucha.

The meal at the Castillo was cooked by local chefs, including Paco Escánez of Restaurante Escánez from Garrucha itself and Antonio Carmona of Terraza Carmona and Juan Moreno of Restaurante Juan Moreno from nearby Vera.

You can read an article about the event HERE

This is a well-appointed bar/restaurant overlooking the the still working harbour with a substantial tapas choice and a cosy dining area plus outside seating on the terrace.

On this occasion we had the following meal

Láminas de ahíja (tuna sushi)

Insalada Escánez (salad of local produce)

Galenes de Tempora

These small tasty fish are only available for a few weeks of the year

Camerón de Garrucha

These small local prawns are marinated in lemon and served in a bowl of ice.

Gambon rojo de Garrucha

The famous red prawn of Garrucha

Patatas a lo pobre (poor man's potatoes)

Dessert

You can also try

The wonderful platter of fresh seafood for two people which contains red prawns. Langoustines, crayfish, mussels, clams, razorfish, shrimps, all sweetly succulent and attractively served.

Zarzuela de marisco (a stew of various fish and seafood which is very typical of restaurants in Northern Spanish Levante, but not so much here)

Crispy octopus leg Grilled vegetables Steamed mussels Grilled hake

To drink we had Jose Pariente Verdejo (Rueda) 2018 which went well with the seafood. If you are a wine lover there is a great list with good variety.

Leave some space for the dessert, they have excellent posteros.

There is a very pleasant promenade where you walk off your meal.

There are always many Spanish diners which is always a good sign.
