ES BOLDADO Michelin Plate IIO

ree

This review contains three different trips to Restaurante Es Boldado in Cala d'hort.

ree

When driving from Sant Josep to Cala d'Hort, take the last right turn to Cala Truja before you get there. After about 3 km, you will see the sign for Es Boldado on your left.

Turn on this road and drive down the dusty Camino (dirt track) for around 1.5km, and you will see the best view of Ibiza. If you want a Restaurant with a view, this is the one for you.

Restaurante Es Boldado is situated on a precipitous cliff, facing the mystical Islets of Es Vedrá (supposedly the third most magnetic place on earth!) and its little sister Es Vedranell.

ree

We had to eat this on a visit with our friend Jonathon Lipsin. To start, ensalada de anchoas y tomates (anchovy and tomato salad)

ree

Arroz negro con pescado, marisco y alioli (black rice with fish, seafood and alioli)

ree

ree

After dinner, try a relaxing and very potent café caleta (a robust alcoholic coffee infused with brandy, cinnamon, lemon peel, and local herbs and spices;—it's a secret recipe, so don't ask!).

ree

There are plenty of friendly indigenous visitors.........

ree

On a previous visit, to start,

ree

we had a freshly made, chilled sangria de cava on the terrace.

ree

This allows us to take in the stunning view before being seated in the Restaurant.

ree

You can eat inside or on the small terrace outside. Rice and seafood are the things to eat here.

We were given pan y aioli to start

ree

Followed by almejas (clams)

ree

Jamón Ibérico de Bellota (finest ham from the acorn fed Iberian black pig)

ree

Pulpo carpaccio (octopus carpaccio)

ree

Gambas a la plancha (grilled prawns)

ree

Mero (grouper)

ree

and the local favourite, pez escorpión (scorpion fish)

ree

One of the most famous dishes at Es Boldado is caldereta de langosta (lobster stew).

ree

Bibs are provided for the messy among us!

ree
ree

The caldereta de langosta (unforgettable lobster stew) is pricey for the wallet @ €145 per kg; you will probably need 2kgs for four people!

Another famous dish is bullit de peix (Ibicencan fish stew with saffron, potatoes and alioli)

You can choose your lobster from the tank.

ree

After cooking, it is then served to your table.

ree

There are also a few meat dishes, like an excellent cochinillo (suckling pig)

ree

For dessert, we had a local speciality, greixonera (made from milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, lemon and the star ingredient ensaimadas (which contain lard), and has to be saved from the previous day as they soak up, better impregnating, all the flavours) and flaó (a delicious cheesecake made from goats cheese, sugar, lemon and mint)

ree

It's an excellent place for lunch, after which you can pop down to the beach at Cala d'Hort to wait for the sunset and go for a swim to get rid of your lunchtime excesses, although this is not advisable after too much café caleta!

ree

In the evening, this place provides an even more romantic setting. On clear, full moonlight nights, you can watch the fabulous sunset, which is even more stunning.

ree

You will need to book most of the year! Ask for a table with a sea view (tables 5 or 6 are good).

Try not to get a table at the back of the Restaurant, or you will miss the view.

ree

It can be hectic in July and August. Service is friendly but can sometimes be a little chaotic, but remember, you are here for the food and the view. To book, lunch is from 3 p.m., and dinner is from 9 p.m. Please note: In the past, they only took cash, but they now accept credit cards (bring some cash, as the credit card machine signal sometimes fails).

Sunset over Es Vedrá 1984, nothing changes......
