MADRID TAPAS BARS IN CALLE DE JESUS AREA
The Plaza de Jesús and its extension, the Calle de Jesús is a street with many bars, mainly filled with locals, near the Prada Museum and other historic sites and a good spot for lunch after visiting the museums etc. On a Thursday lunchtime in February we had a leisurely stroll for tapas and drinks.

We did not eat here this time but it is a very good cerveceria offering typical tapas and raciones. There are many meat and seafood dishes. The last time here, we had half a ration of calamari, a full ration of pulpo a la Gallega and zamburiñas. The prices are reasonable, and the food and service are very good.

A busy spot when we went on a Thursday lunchtime, it was filled with regulars and locals, exactly what we were looking for and had a buzzy atmosphere.
Customers have the option of dining in the restaurant or in the charming interior of the bar.
You get a free tapa with your caña.
From the large selection of canned tapas, we chose, the excellent sardinillas in oil.
and smoked sardines.

Most of the food here is canned. It's a traditional method of food preservation in Madrid. In this case, seafood is done well. On a previous visit, we had the canned razor clams which were superb. The brine with a few hunks of bread is really tasty. There's no sand in the razor clams and the liquid the product is canned in develops a wonderful flavour. The staff here are very sweet and fun. We have also had prawns and octopus in the past.

Authentic Madrid Taberna with interesting décor.
Upon entering, you first encounter the entrance room with the displays of tapas and pintos on the bar and a couple of tables with tall chairs, suited mainly for standing. If you walk through the bar area, you will find more seating in the back room and basement.
Have a good look at the history all around you.
Check out the walls
and don't miss the ceiling either,
which are filled with historic artefacts and interesting period pieces, even an old petrol station pump!
We had a glass of Rueda with a free chorizo tapa.

Small and cosy place with super friendly staff.
They serve some of the best jamón and pollo croquetas (ham and chicken) in Madrid.
We had an excellent sopa de frijoles y almejas (a tasty bean and clam soup) which was from the 3 course menu del dia which costs €12 for 3 courses.

A small, cosy place with a maritime decoration.
We had a very good pulpo de roca gallega (octopus with potatoes and pimenton).

To drink we had vermouth.
All the food on display looked like top-class produce.
The staff, who hail from the Dominican Republic, are very entertaining and attentive.
To say goodbye, we were given a gin and tonic with a lollipop! A place to return to.
By now we were full, so could not eat or drink anymore. The three bars below which we have been to in the past are all worth trying.

Great little Taberna with a large selection of drinks and food. Outside seating is available and the interior is an eclectic fusion of old and new that works really well. The food quality is excellent and priced well.

A solid local establishment. Good service, generous portions & delicious, well-prepared staples like calamari, octopus, pan con tomate, Rabo de Toro & croquetas de Jamón. Perhaps the best thing about this bar is its great ambience when busy.

This is a small but great bar if you are around Huertas / Prado area. You can have breakfast or hang out with your friends at night. Full of locals eating tapas and drinking beer or local Spanish gin called Nordés. At night it is usually crowded, so try to arrive early on Fridays and Saturdays.
This is the real Madrid. It is a great street for lunchtime or an evening tapas bar crawl and a fun place, mainly frequented by locals and a few tourists.
