MADRID TAPAS BARS IN THE CALLE DE JESUS AREA
The Plaza de Jesús and its extension, the Calle de Jesús, is a street with many bars, mainly filled with locals, near the Prada Museum and other historic sites, and a good spot for lunch after visiting the museums, etc. On a Thursday lunchtime in February, we had a stroll for tapas and drinks.
CERVANTES

We did not eat here this time, but it is a very good cerveceria offering typical tapas and raciones. It also provides many meat and seafood dishes. The last time we were here, we had half a calamari ration, a full pulpo a la Gallega, and zamburiñas. The prices are reasonable, and the food and service are delicious.
LA DOLORES

When we went to lunchtime on Thursday, it was a busy spot. It was filled with regulars and locals, precisely what we were looking for, and it had a buzzy atmosphere.
Customers have the option of dining in the restaurant or the charming interior of the bar.
You get a free tapa with your caña.
From the large selection of canned tapas we chose, the excellent sardinillas are in oil.
And smoked sardines.

Most of the food here is canned, a traditional method of food preservation in Madrid. In this case, seafood is done well. On a previous visit, we had the canned razor clams, which were superb. The brine with a few hunks of bread is delicious. There's no sand in the razor clams, and the liquid the product is canned in develops a wonderful flavour. The staff here is lovely and fun. We have also had prawns and octopus in the past.

Authentic Madrid Taberna with interesting décor.
Upon entering, you first encounter the entrance room with displays of tapas and pintos on the bar and a couple of tables with tall chairs suited mainly for standing. Walking through the bar area, you will find more seating in the back room and basement.
Have a good look at the history all around you.
Check out the walls
and don't miss the ceiling,
which is filled with historical artefacts, interesting period pieces, and even an old petrol station pump!
We had a glass of Rueda with a free chorizo tapa.
And a half racion of anchovies.
EL GALLO CANTA

It is a small and cosy place with super friendly staff.
They serve some of Madrid's best jamón and pollo croquetas (ham and chicken).
We had an excellent sopa de frijoles y almejas (a tasty bean and clam soup) from the 3-course menu del dia, which costs €14.

EL GRAN CANTÁBRICO

It is a small, cosy place with a maritime decoration.
We had a very good pulpo de roca gallega (octopus with potatoes and pimenton).
And a stunning racion of anchoas Gran Cantábrico.
Served with excellent bread.
To drink, we had vermouth.
All the food on display looked like top-class produce.
The staff, who hail from the Dominican Republic, are entertaining and attentive.
We were given a gin and tonic with a lollipop to say goodbye! A place to return to.
By now, we were full and could not eat or drink anymore. The three bars below, which we have been to in the past, are all worth trying.
LA EÑE

This is a tremendous little Taberna with many drinks and food. Outside seating is available, and the interior is an eclectic fusion of old and new that works well. The food quality is excellent, and the prices are reasonable.
CERVECERÍA EL DIARIO

This is a solid local establishment. It offers good service, generous portions, and delicious, well-prepared staples like calamari, octopus, pan con tomate, rablo de tomate, and croquetas de Jamón. Perhaps the best thing about this bar is its great ambience when it is busy.
LA ESQUINA

This is a small but great bar in the Huertas / Prado area. It is a great place to have breakfast or hang out with friends at night. The bar is full of locals eating tapas and drinking beer or a local Spanish gin called Nordés. It is usually crowded at night, so try to arrive early on Fridays and Saturdays.
This is the real Madrid. It is an excellent street for lunchtime or an evening tapas bar crawl and a fun place mainly frequented by locals and a few tourists.
