TABERNA LA NIÑA DEL PISTO

This is one of our favourite bars/restaurants in the old town of Marbella. You will find it hidden, down a small, narrow pasaje (passageway), but you won't if you don't pay attention to where you are going.

This authentic Andalusian tapas bar is always busy with locals and tourists alike and is reputedly the oldest tapas bar in the Marbella area.

The bar area inside is very traditional, beautifully decorated, with many photos of bullfighting scenes and artefacts covering the walls.

You could say it is like arriving back in the 1970s, the food is delicious and is cooked to order by two lady cooks in the open kitchen at the side of the bar.

You can have tapas at the bar, sit at a table, or at a barrel in the small bar area. There is also a more formal restaurant upstairs, if you prefer. They have an excellent wine selection, including many sherries, which are displayed behind the bar.

Over a few visits, we tried the following dishes.

Boquerones de Donosti (unusually, served slightly warm).

Tosta de Sardina Ahumada (smoked sardines on toast).

Fritas de boquerones con limón, calamares y gambas.

Langostinos al ajillo (garlic prawns).

Ratatouille con huevo frito (ratatouille with fried egg).

From the specials board, cocochas (deep-fried, battered hake cheeks)

and rabo de Toro.

This was all washed down with a glass of Albariño, Fino en rama, and a Monteagudo cream sherry.

And a palo cortado gran barquero.

This is a small, intimate venue and great value for money. All of the food is top-notch.

The staff were efficient and friendly, including the owner/chef, María José, who says it is essential to try her famous and highly rated salmorejo.
