ANDALUCÍA - CÁDIZ - EL FARO
EL FARO
An authentic Spanish dining experience in this hidden treasure tucked away in the old fishing quarter of Cádiz.
A locally popular family-run restaurant. Nicely set up tables and unpretentious cuisine, with outstanding fish and seafood dishes. In the past, we have eaten in the restaurant.
This time we ate at the very visceral and much more fun tapas bar, which we prefer but, be warned, you will have to come prepared to stand up all night propping the bar, there are no bar stools.
Don't get there before 9 pm or you will be dining alone.
Bear in mind that like most places in Cádiz, most of the tapas here are deep-fried, for which Cádiz is famous. It is believed fish and chips originated here.
From the bar, we ordered the following tapas.
Tortillitas de Camarones (crisp wafers of chickpea and wheat flour densely studded with the minuscule shell-on shrimp).
Patatas aliñadas (a Cádiz speciality of soft potatoes, thick with oil, parsley and spring onion).
Judiones con salmón ahumado (giant butter beans with smoked salmon).
Bacalao ahumado sobre crema de queso y caramelizada (smoked cod over cheese and caramelised cream.
Boquerones fritas (deep-fried anchovies).
Chocos fritas (deep-fried cuttlefish).
Pavia de bacalao y wasabi sobre una Crema de membrillo y boniato a la mostaza en grano (pavia of Cod and wasabi on a Cream of Quince and sweet potato and grained mustard).
Pinchos de Langostinos envueltos en bricks y fritos (deep fried prawn skewers).
Bocadiltos de Bacon con Queso y Puerro (bacon with Cheese and Leek).
Albóndigas de ternera con rabo guisado al Jerez oloroso (veal meatballs in a oloroso sherry stew).
Finish with raisin ice cream covered in sweet Pedro Ximénez.
The bar does get very busy, so try and secure your place at the bar and don’t move!
It is filled with well-heeled locals at the weekend.
Service was brisk and friendly on this quiet day in February, a day after the fiesta had finished.
Most of the tapas range from €2.50/€3.50 Beer/Cerveza €2.20 a glass House wine €2.50 a glass
