RESTAURANT CAN RAFALET After a few years away, we returned to Restaurante Can Rafalet, in Es Caló de Sant Agustí, on the Island of Formentera, which boasts some of the most stunning views in the Balearic Islands.

ree

The sea is at its fabulous best here, and from our reserved front table, we could see it in all its stunning turquoise glory.

When you sit down, you receive a delicious bowl of aioli (rich with garlic) and olives, along with a basket of crusty rolls to scoop up the garlicky dip. We decided to have the bullet de peix, which comes in two courses.

ree

A fish stew with potatoes and saffron (typically, monkfish, scorpionfish, grouper or skate).

ree

And a wet (soupy) or dry rice.

ree

We chose the dry, similar to another rice dish called Arroz a banda.

ree

This uses the stock from the fish stew, adding small pieces of cuttlefish.

ree

We also had huevos con sobrasada,

ree

Potatoes, fried eggs and local soft sausage.

ree

Calamares Romana (squid rings in batter).

ree

To drink, we wanted to try the local Formentera wines, but they were, unfortunately, sold out.

ree

Instead, we chose a Rezabal Txakoli from the Basque Country. This young, slightly fizzy white wine went well with the fish.

ree

Dessert was a local pudding called greixonera. This traditional dessert from Ibiza and Formentera is usually made with leftover ensaimada (a spiral-shaped sweet pastry).

ree

Like a bread pudding, greixonera consists of pieces of ensaimada combined with milk and eggs. The whole combination is then baked until firm and golden brown. The cake is often flavoured with cinnamon. Vegetarians beware, ensaimadas are made with lard.

ree

Excellent quality fish and seafood are available here. It was an excellent meal, and the view wasn't bad either. As you can see, the view is outstanding.

The restaurant has been here for many years, serving traditional Island food.

ree

All the staff were very friendly and helpful. It is a place to return to.

ree

To avoid confusion, there are two places side by side here, both with a similar name and lovely sea views: 1) Cafe Rafalet, which is part of the hostal Rafalet 2) Restaurant Can Rafalet

ree

If you want tapas, "pan con cosas," and a good breakfast, go to Cafe Rafalet. They don't take table reservations, so it's first come, first served.

If you want one of the various fish or rice dishes, go to Restaurant Can Rafalet. Book a table in the first row to have the best sea view.
