CHOCOLATERÍA SAN GINÉS

The San Ginés Chocolatería & Churrería Madrid has been in business since 1894. It is one of Madrid’s most famous chocolaterías and is centrally located, just a short walk from Puerta del Sol. Open 24 hours a day, it has long been a favourite with Madrid’s late-night crowds, who head to San Ginés for something tasty and sweet after a night out.

The chocolatería retains the atmosphere of a traditional late-19th-century café, with two floors, white marble tables and walls filled with photographs of famous visitors. It also has outdoor seating.

There is no menu because it is obvious what people will eat. As it is so popular, expect to wait a bit for a table at any hour. The churros are made to order and are hot, crunchy, and not too sweet or oily like some you may have tried before.

A churro is a fried dough pastry.

The chocolate is of excellent quality. Dark, decadent and perfectly sweetened.

It’s worth the queue to get your chocolate fix. You could easily share one portion if you’re on a tight budget. They also serve porras (larger, thicker churros), but you will only get 2 with your chocolate.

Once served, a delicious hot chocolate costs €3.70, while a portion of six churros costs €2.50, with swift, friendly waiter service in these traditional surroundings.

Open all night, it creates a pleasing ambience, and its location on Pasadizo de San Ginés, very close to Puerta del Sol, means it’s busy day and night.
