Restaurante Vistas

We had a short hop over the border into Portugal for a round of golf at Monte Rei Golf & Country Club. The course is set on over 400 hectares in the East Algarve countryside, this refined country club with villa accommodations is 9 km from the Praia da Manta Rota beach and 13 km from Castle of Castro Marim.

We topped off our afternoon on one of Europe's best golf course with dinner at Restaurante Vistas, set with stunning views over the course. We were warmly welcomed and the professionalism of the waiting staff stood out all night.

The quality of the food is probably worthy of a Michelin star. The...

For our third and final lunch on our short Lisbon trip we decided on something more modern and trendy after two very traditional restaurants.

From the outside the place looks quite small but is actually two restaurants in one building. The front is the Taberna and delicatessen which serves small plates and tapas and has a buzy atmosphere.

The rear is the Páteo, which is a full restaurant with modern interpretations of Portuguese cuisine.

We ate in Páteo, which is the main restaurant.  It has a kitchen which is open to a large patio dining room. This creates a nice ambience which I imagine would be qui...

This little restaurant was the second traditional place we visited on our short trip to Lisbon.

You need to walk past all the aggressive street touts who stand with their menu with pictures of food in this street and find this restaurant, which is at the end of Rua dos Correeiros. It can be hard work, making your way up the Rua dos Correeiros, even if you avoid any eye contact, you will have a menu thrust under your nose. Fortunately, if you are coming from the Praça do Comércio end of the street, this is the first restaurant you will encounter.

Once there you will find a very classic small restaurant with a...

We went to three restaurants on our short trip to Lisbon to watch the Benfica v Manchester United Champions League match. Two are traditional and one a modern take on Portuguese cuisine. The first was the very traditional

This is a hidden restaurant on the outskirts of Monsanto, where you can enjoy delicious traditional Portuguese cuisine, and where, in Lisbon, some of the best grilled fish is served.

It as been a family business for three generations and is in a remote run down residential area in Buraca, it is not easy to find and definitely off the tourist track. Even the taxi’s with satnav still...

Jonathon Lipsin adds his second trip across the border into Portugal and Porto.

I am writing this because I promised the woman who presides over this place I would. A few weeks ago according to my Portuguese sources she asked about it and so if I thought if I ever wanted to go back again I had better do it, so I did!

There is a special restaurant I would like to tell you about in Matosinhos, Porto, near the water and the fish market. On this street with the beaches a stones throw away restaurant after fish restaurant greet you but this is my place to go…

I have fond memories here of both eating o...

Another trip across the Portuguese border. This time to Moreira de Cónegos, between Braga and Porto, and in the countryside near Guimaraes.

Not the easiest place to find, even with a sat nav. When you do you will  see no name on the outside of a building which could be mistaken for a workshop.

After walking around the building we find the un-named entrance door and walk into the very pleasant surprise of a stunning traditionl Portuguese setting.

The large windows in the open dining room offer views across to the restaurants local vinho verde vineyards and the green surrounding mountainside.

You can also the the loc...

A Food experience across the border in Porto, Portugal by  Jonathon Lipsin

Today I was taken by my friends here in Porto, Portugal to a working man's restaurant seemingly in the middle of nowhere. It is by a river with big trees not unlike those in California looming outside the windows of a industrial style, huge dining room, There is wood fired oven and long banquet type tables all with dishes set upside down as is the custom here.

True enough, clumps of working people huddled down at disparate distances in the dining room over mysterious bowls and plates of steaming food.

A basket of homemad...
