27 Dec 2019

In Decemebr 2019 we returned to the fishing port of Getaria and the excellent Restaurante Kaia-Kaipe.

Getaria is the typical picture postcard Basque Country fishing village.

The village was home to Plácido Domingo’s mother and the famous fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga

You can now visit the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa (€7 entry fee)

Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa

It was also home to the explorer, navigator, and mariner Juan Sebastián Elkano, who became the first man to circumnavigate the globe (Also spelt Juan Sebastián del Cano, de Elcano and Elcano (1476 - 1526)

Once you have parked your car in the carpark in the bay...

Cañabota

If you are looking for fish, this is the place to go to in Sevilla.

This is a restaurant specialising in fish and seafood, offering both the informal ambience of a tapas bar and the bright appeal of an open-view sushi bar. The superb display cabinet of fish and its charcoal grill are the star attractions.

There is an open plan kitchen, where you will be able to see the fish being prepared and cooked to your preference and method of cooking.

All the seafood comes from local waters near Huelva, which has a very interesting and wide variety of choice.

Be aware, this place, is really a...

ASADOR IZASKUN

We had driven past the sign for Asador Izaskun lurking above the trees on the motorway the day before and I said to friends in the car that looks like it could be a nice restaurant. Without realising, this was to be our third and final restaurant visit on our short trip to Sax in Alicante to visit our friend Howard Goldsmith.

On arrival we found a restaurant set in beautiful surroundings with manicured gardens.

We where taken to a large dinning room with large window views to the gardens.

The restaurant can be used for large banquets, weddings etc.

The restaurant is Basque influenced and specialises in gri...

Restaurante La Torreta

We visited this traditional road side restaurant in the Sax / Elda area of Alicante on the recommendation of our friend, Howard Goldsmith, who has lived in the area for 12 years.

It is run by two very friendly sisters who were our hosts for the day.

There is a large indoor seating room and a shaded outside terrace area for when the weather is good, which seems to be almost all of the time around here.

On this occasion we ate inside as the weather was a bit inclement, although on leaving the sun was back to its best.

The food was excellent and good value for the price

We started with a plate of grill...

EMBER YARD

Revisted 14/8/2017

Located in the ever busy Soho, Ember Yard serves up excellent Spanish / Italian tapas cooked over Basque charcoal grill (embers, get it?) from the people behind Salt Yard, Dehesa and Opera Tavern.

This is the latest in a mini-chain of London’s highly rated new-style Tapas bars. Setting this art deco restaurant and bar apart is the method used for cooking.

The Spanish and Italian plates are cooked over charcoal from the open kitchen. This not only adds a sense of authenticity, but also means that each dish has a uniquely smoky fingerprint.

Stuffed and Deep Fried Gordal Olives wi...

Restaurante Ca's Pages

This is one of the most historic northern Ibiza restaurants. It is run by two sisters, Carmen and Lucia and dates from 1972. It is located in the basement of the family home and in the shaded planted back garden.

The outdoor, partly covered seating is beautiful, full of green plants and if you come early you have a great choice of seating. There are big, long tables for families or a romantic small table set up in one of the hidden corners.

On colder days you'll find a cosy spot inside the restaurant itself which has a great log fire off season.

The food concept is simple: You order whatever...

La Taperia - Mesón del Asador (formally Pulpo y Aparte)

If you are looking for grilled and or octopus in Jerez de la Frontera, this is the place to come.

If you like pulpo (octopus) you will not go wrong in finding this smart little tapas bar. They have different options, from healthy boiled traditional Pulpo a Feira to pan fried versions.

The excellent Pulpo a Feira here is so good you would almost think you are in some little pulpeira in cool Galicia rather then the baking hot sherry town of Jerez de la Frontera.

There are also excellent grilled meats like chuletón de vaca retinta

 or chuletón de buey

Also try Pimentos...

RESTAURANTE O LUSITANO

Jonathon Lipsin adds his second trip across the border into Portugal and Porto.

I am writing this because I promised the woman who presides over this place I would. A few weeks ago according to my Portuguese sources she asked about it and so if I thought if I ever wanted to go back again I had better do it, so I did!

There is a special restaurant I would like to tell you about in Matosinhos, Porto, near the water and the fish market. On this street with the beaches a stones throw away restaurant after fish restaurant greet you but this is my place to go…

I have fond memories here of both eating o...
