Chef de Mar Ángel León Gonzales now, has his third Michelin star in this ultra modern restaurant, which he has recently moved into. It is, a converted 18th century flour mill, overlooking the estuary and most appropriately looks out to sea, by the banks of the Guadalete River.

The old restaurant is now an up-market tapas bar/restaurant and is called

Three Michelin Stars

A return visit to the Angel Leóns restaurant (famous for his cuisine of the sea and only from the sea).

We had previously visited the restaurant in its old guise in the centre of El Puerto de Santa Maria, which is now their up-market tapas bar/restaurant. The new one is just outside of town.

The new, far more glamorous place is just outside of town in what was an old flour mill, originally built in 1815. A small river/stream flows under the current building and the energy generated was used to grind the wheat into flour.

AZURMENDI     3 Michelin Stars

Chef Eneko Atxa Azurmendi was the youngest Spanish chef to obtain 3 Michelin stars in 2012.

You will find out why when you arrive at this sub tropical glass house overlooking the stunning Basque countryside 25 minutes outside of Bilbao.

Azurmendi is an ecosystem by itself, based on sustainability. It is environmentally friendly, uses renewable energies and recycles any waste generated, harvests the rainfall and heats and cools the facilities using geothermal energy.

They have also just started producing their own wines, from vines, rolling down the hill, in front of the rest...

elBulli - 3 Michelin Stars

This is an old one from 2009, but it's good to look back sometimes, especially when the restaurant is no more. This review is from the world renowned elBulli which closed in 2011 and was run by the famous Catalan chef Ferran Adriá.

The restaurant was around 7 km outside the town of Roses on the Costa Brava coast.

You will spend a hair raising taxi drive along the coast road before getting to the restaurant which sits alone above the small bay of Cala Montjoi in an old Catalan finca.

Three Michelin Stars

On this occasion we took a trip over the Spanish border from San Sebastián (some 175 km) into France to the wonderful Les Prés-d'Eugenie. 

Michel Guérard opened Les Prés-d'Eugenie in the tiny commune of Eugénie-les-Bains in 1974 and gained a third Michelin star in 1977, only three years after taking over.

He has retained this third star for forty years and now has the longest such continuous run since the recent death of  Paul Bocuse who had gained his in 1965.

Eugénie-les-Bains is a pretty little commune, which I would imagine is a delightful place to visit in summer. We went during a rainy Decembe...

The second part of the trip to catalunya in 2009, this time to the Roca brothers restaurant in Girona, which has been rated  number one in the world on a few occasions. 

El Celler de Can Roca is a restaurant in Girona, Catalonia, Spain which was opened in 1986 by the Roca brothers, Joan, Josep and Jordi. It was first located next to their parent's restaurant Can Roca, but moved to its current purpose built building in 2007. It has been received warmly by critics, and currently holds three Michelin stars.
